Possibly messed-up headcanon about this: this is Tony in an alternate universe where he got attacked by a vampire instead of his heart injury: he built the armor not to protect himself, but to protect others from him and contain his bloodlust. The crosses on it affect other vamps, but Tony as well, keeping him sane in an extreme version of the same way that some people bite their lip to keep from saying something….
I’d had a similar idea on my Superhero RPG site.
